The Monument to the Discoveries

INTRODUCTION

This wonder reminds us of the Portuguese expansion by sea, it synthesizes a glorious past and symbolizes the greatness of Infante D. Henrique’s work, the booster of discovery.

In the monument we can see a small boat making its way into the sea, in its bow Infante D. Henrique and other characters of this adventure and of that time’s culture: sailors, cartographers, colonizers, preachers, writers and artists, who are portrayed with the symbols that individualize them.

​

O Padrão dos Descobrimentos, created by the architect Cottinelli Telmo and by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, was fleetingly erected for the first time in 1940 and integrated in the Exposição do Mundo Português (the portuguese world exhibit).

​

In 1960, in the 500th year anniversary of Infante D. Henrique’s death, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos is rebuilt in concrete.

​

In 1985, it is inaugurated as the Centro Cultural das Descobertas.

​
